Although small in size, Kyllini boasts big attractions and breathtaking landscapes. The preferred way to soak it all in is by car. The roads here are generally well-maintained but can be hilly, especially near the coast. So, opting for a car in the compact or mid-size class would serve most travellers well. Manual transmission is common in Greece, but automatic cars are available too, albeit at a slightly higher price.
The Greeks drive on the right side of the road, unlike in the UK where we drive on the left. Please keep this in mind! The speed limit typically ranges from 50km/h in urban areas to 130km/h on motorways. Greece operates a strict drink driving law, the limit being 0.05% (0.02% for drivers with less than two years of experience), which can make for a big difference than at home. Seatbelts are compulsory for everyone in the vehicle.
In most areas, parking is quite easy to find. There are several free parking spaces available near attractions and beach areas, making it perfectly convenient. However, to avoid any unpleasant surprises, it's always best to double-check parking rules and signs in the area.
For history buffs, Kyllini's Castle is a must-see. Built in the 13th century, it offers panoramic views of the area. The Olympia, an ancient sanctuary, is just around an hour drive away. Take advantage of your rental car and immerse in the heritage of the land!
For a refreshing dip, head to Kyllini's Golden Beach or Arkoudi Beach, both easily accessible by car. Kyllini also acts as a gateway to the exotic Ionian Islands such as Zakynthos, which is just a short ferry ride away.
The local people are warm and welcoming. The town has a relaxed, slow-paced lifestyle which may be a contrast to the UK’s faster pace, but is perfect for a rejuvenating getaway. While English is widely understood, a few basic Greek words will certainly help to break the ice with locals.
The currency here is the Euro (€). While credit cards are accepted in most places, it's not uncommon for small businesses to operate on a cash-only basis. So, keeping some Euros handy would be a good idea.
The climate is typically Mediterranean, with dry, hot summers and mild winters. The best time to visit is during Spring (April to June) and Autumn (September to November), when temperatures are pleasant.
Experience the local culture by joining in on the local festivals and events, which are usually marked by traditional music and food. The summer months are particularly vibrant with various beach parties and music festivals.
So pack your bags and buckle up for an amazing drive through the scenic beauty of Kyllini. Safe trip!
