Jacksons International Airport, also known locally as Port Moresby Airport, is the main hub for air travel in Papua New Guinea. It is located around 8 kilometers from the city centre of Port Moresby. Offering both international and domestic flights, the airport is served by airlines like Air Niugini, PNG Air, and Qantas. It's equipped with two parallel runways, a domestic terminal, and an international terminal.
The airport provides basics like free access to hydration stations, lounges, and restrooms. Additionally, you can find duty-free shops, dining options, currency exchange, ATMs, and a tourist office to help visitors navigate their journey.
Getting to your accommodation has never been easier. Upon arrival, you have several options to choose from including taxis, hotel shuttles, and car rentals. We recommend car rentals as it gives you the flexibility to navigate and explore at your own pace.
Several car hire companies operate at Jacksons International Airport, including big-name companies like Avis and Budget. These companies have service desks in the international terminal where you can pick up your pre-booked car. If you haven't booked your car in advance, walk-up rentals are also available.
Driving in Papua New Guinea can be pretty different from what you're used to back home. One of the main differences is the driving lane. Unlike in the UK, here you'll be driving on the right side of the road. The recommended car class would be SUV for smoother journeys on rough terrains. Do remember that the local police enforce a strict drink-driving law.
Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea's sprawling capital, is not too far away from the airport. Don’t forget to visit prominent attractions such as the National Museum and Art Gallery or the bustling fish market.
If you wish to roam further afield, the Highlands Highway is an excellent route that offers breathtaking views and authentic cultural experiences. Lae, the second-largest city, is a 6-hour drive away and worth a visit.
The official currency in Papua New Guinea is the Kina. English is one of the three official languages, so communication shouldn't be a problem. The tropical climate means it's warm most of the year, but don't forget to pack a raincoat!
We hope this guide serves as a handy prelude to your journey and that it has excited you for the adventures waiting upon your arrival. Enjoy your drive and the beautiful landscapes of Papua New Guinea!
