The first noticeable difference from the UK will be that in Papua New Guinea, people drive on the right side of the road, not the left. But don’t worry, it won’t take long to adapt.
The general speed limit in Port Moresby is 60km/h in urban areas and up to 100km/h on highways. Speed is strictly monitored through radars and cameras. Papua New Guinea also follows zero-tolerance for drink-driving.
Given the terrain and occasional bumpy roads, we recommend rugged SUVs or pickup trucks for the comfortable and worry-free journey.
While parking might be a touchy subject in the UK, you’ll find plenty of free parking in public areas and shopping centres in Port Moresby. However, don’t forget to lock your car!
Port Moresby is laden with cultural centres, parks, and water attractions. These include the National Capital Botanical Gardens, National Museum and Art Gallery, Adventure Park PNG, and APEC Haus.
The best way to take in the beauty of the city is by driving along the Poreporena Freeway, which offers picturesque views of the surrounding hills and the coastline.
The city experiences a tropical climate, which means warm weather all year. The Hiri Moale Festival in September, which celebrates the culture of local Motuans, should not be missed.
The local currency is the Papua New Guinean kina. Automated teller machines (ATMs) and currency exchange offices are readily available.
Most travellers reach Port Moresby via Jacksons International Airport. Public transportation from the airport is reliable, but having a rental car gives a greater comfort and freedom.
