The Carrasco International Airport, also known as General Cesáreo L. Berisso International Airport, is the largest airport in Uruguay. It's situated in the city of Ciudad de la Costa, more precisely in the Carrasco neighborhood, which is about 15 miles from the capital city, Montevideo.
There's a variety of car rental stations located right at the airport, inclusive of global and local brands. You will find their counters inside the arrival hall. But why limit yourself to what's available on the spot when you can pre-book your perfect ride online?
The nearest gas stations to the airport are ANCAP (Aeroparque) and Petrolera del Conosur, both located within a few miles.
Driving in Uruguay might be little different from driving in the UK. Drive on the right-hand side of the road and always give way to the right, unless you're on a priority road. Seat belts are mandatory and children under 12 must sit in the back seats. The main route from the airport to Montevideo is via Ruta 101 and Av. Italia.
Uruguay experiences a temperate climate which ranges from 17°C to 28°C during summer (December to March) and falls down to 6°C to 15°C in winter (June to September).
The official currency of Uruguay is the Uruguayan Peso (UYU). Keep in mind that not all places accept credit cards, especially in more remote areas.
Your adventure doesn't stop at the airport. The two largest cities, Montevideo and Punta del Este, are rich in cultural, architectural and gastronomic experiences.
Whether you prefer a fuel-efficient compact, a spacious SUV, or a zippy sports car, there are a variety of choices available. Make sure to consider the type of roads you'll be driving on and the amount of luggage you'll have.
