Driving in Montevideo might seem a tad bit different from what you're used to back home. The city drives on the right-hand side of the road and steady beeping is a common occurrence- a sharp contrast from the UK! The general speed limit within the city is 45km/h (28mph) and 90km/h (56mph) on highways unless otherwise indicated. Seat belts are mandatory.
On-street parking in the downtown area is metered from Monday to Friday between 10 AM and 6 PM, and it's free outside of these hours and on weekends. For those exploring outside of the city, we recommend a compact car for its fuel efficiency and easier parking.
The city is served by Carrasco International Airport, three major bus terminals and a bustling port. However, renting a car is by far the most convenient way to explore Montevideo and its surroundings at your own pace.
City's heart, Ciudad Vieja, is a must-visit for its colonial architecture, bustling markets, and vibrant nightlife. Other notable neighbourhoods include Pocitos and Punta Carretas, known for their beaches and shopping centres.
When in Montevideo, don't miss out on the chance to visit the charming cities of Colonia and Punta del Este.
Uruguay's official currency is the Uruguayan Peso (UYU). The city enjoys a temperate climate, with a very mild winter (June to September) and a warm, summer (December to March).
Feasting and festivities are a significant part of Uruguayan culture. The Montevideo Carnival, held in January and February, is the longest carnival season in the world, lasting over 40 days!
From its beautiful beaches and historical neighbourhoods to its sizzling steaks and fascinating culture, Montevideo has something unique to offer every traveller. Renting a car to explore this beautiful city at your own pace is a great way to ensure you get the most out of your visit.
