Driving in St. John's can be remarkably different from driving in the UK. Be prepared for driving on the right-hand side of the road. Don't worry, though - the adjustment is typically swift and natural.
Remember, unlike in the UK, speed limits are strict here, and roads are well policed, so stick to the rules.
Street parking in the city centre is metered from Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm. If you're exploring the downtown area, consider using the convenient parking garages.
A compact car is generally recommended. The city roads are well-maintained and a smaller vehicle makes parking in St. John's easier. However, if you're planning to venture outside of the city, an SUV can handle the rugged terrains better.
Explore the historic downtown area, characterised by colourful victorian houses. Following Water Street will lead you to Signal Hill, where you can enjoy breathtaking panoramic views of the city and the sea. Just a short drive from the city, you find the iconic Cape Spear Lighthouse - North America's easternmost point.
Beyond the city centre, the suburb of Quidi Vidi, known for its quaint fishing village vibe, is worth a visit. As for beaches, Topsail Beach and Middle Cove Beach are local favourites.
St. John's is known for its friendly population. Feel the genuine warmth of Canadian hospitality coupled with an infectious east coast vibe.
The city experiences a humid continental climate with cool summers and mild winters. And don't forget, Canada uses the Canadian Dollar (CAD), not the British Pound!
Your journey will most likely begin at St. John's International Airport, from where you can conveniently pick up your rental car. It provides an excellent base for exploring the city and the surrounding areas. If you're planning to venture further, the Trans-Canada Highway offers an epic cross-island journey.
Visiting St. John's during one of their seasonal events like the Royal St. John's Regatta or the Newfoundland and Labrador Folk Festival can make your trip even more enjoyable!
