La Paz is nestled in a canyon created by the Choqueyapu River. At an elevation of around 3,650 meters above sea level, it is the highest administrative capital in the world, offering breathtaking views of the Andes Mountains. The city’s charm lies in its bustling flower markets, quirky witchcraft shops, intriguing museums, and a vibrant nightlife.
Given the hilly terrain and narrow streets of La Paz, compact or small standard cars would be your best bet. Not only are they more manoeuvrable, but they're also more cost-effective when it comes to fuel consumption.
Driving in La Paz is on the right side of the road, similar to the UK. The general speed limit in urban areas is 50 km/hr, highways outside of populated areas are usually limited to 80 km/hr. Seat belts are mandatory for all passengers and remember to always carry your driving license, passport, and car hire documents when driving.
Parking in La Paz can be a challenge, with limited street parking available. We recommend using inspected car parks and avoid parking overnight on the street if possible. The city also offers an extensive public transportation network with buses, trams, and the world’s largest urban cable car system, which offers not just a means of transportation but an unmatched skyline view of La Paz.
La Paz has a subtropical highland climate, with rainy summers and dry winters. Bolivia’s currency is the Bolivian Boliviano (BOB). ATMs are widely available and credit cards are accepted in most places. Always carry some cash for local markets and smaller establishments.
