Driving in Yukon

Road conditions

Yukon has a variety of roads: paved highways, gravel roads and backcountry roads. The roads here are unlike your standard roads in the UK. Some are unpaved and narrow with short or non-existent hard shoulder areas.

Driver's licence and insurance

British drivers will be happy to know that they can drive in Yukon with a valid UK driving license for up to 120 days. You're however required to carry your license, proof of insurance, and vehicle registration with you while driving.

Travel tips

Here are some tips when travelling in Yukon:

  • Be aware of wildlife on the roads. It's common to spot moose and bears along the way.
  • Make sure your vehicle is equipped with a spare tyre and emergency kit. Service stations can be few and far between.
  • Like in UK, steering is on the left side and everyone travels on the right side of the road.

Rental Car Recommendations

Considering Yukon's variable roads, renting a 4X4 vehicle may be beneficial. Mobility won’t be an issue in this spacious vehicle, allowing you to enjoy the scenery without worrying about the terrain!

Weather Conditions

Yukon is known for its extreme weather conditions, with long, cold winters and brief warm summers. Road conditions vary widely depending on the season, so always check local forecasts before setting out and plan your trip accordingly.

Experience the Northern Lights

Yukon offers one of the best natural shows on earth – the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. The lights are visible from mid-August to mid-April, offering an unforgettable sight.

Ready for your Yukon adventure? Just remember to keep safe, respect the wildlife, and enjoy your drive!
