Traveling to Yangon

Your point of entry is the Yangon International Airport, the largest and busiest airport in Myanmar. Direct flights from UK to Myanmar are not available, usually, you will have to transit through Middle Eastern or Asian countries.

Driving in Yangon

  • Side of the Road: In Myanmar, like in the UK, driving is on the right-hand side of the road. However, a majority of the cars are right-hand drive which might need some getting used to!
  • Speed Limits: The speed limit within city areas is usually 30-40km/h and on highways, it's between 60-100km/h.
  • Traffic Rules: Unlike in the UK, traffic signals are not often used in Myanmar; the traffic is often controlled by traffic police officers, especially during rush hours.
  • Parking: There is a mixture of paid and free parking. Also, lookout for private properties as some might appear like public parking.

Renting a car can give you the freedom to explore this city in your own time. But mind you, Yangon's streets are busy and chaotic, a bit like driving in central London, but certainly more intense.

Sights and Experiences

Yangon has a mixed bag of attractions to appeal to every taste. Some must-visit sites include the imposing Shwedagon Pagoda, Bogyoke market and the British colonial buildings around the city like the Secretariat building and Yangon City Hall.

For fans of the British series 'Top Gear', they did a road trip across Myanmar in 2014. You might want to visit some of the featured locations.

English in Yangon

Unlike the language barrier you might face in other Asian countries, English is widely understood and spoken in Yangon, which is a heritage of British colonisation. However, it could come handy to learn a few basic phrases in the Burmese language.

Weather and Best Time to Visit

Yangon has a tropical monsoon climate. There are three main seasons - the cool, monsoon, and hot season. The best time to visit is during the cool season, which is from November to February. Unlike UK, it's warm and dry, perfect to enjoy sightseeing and outdoor activities.

Money Matters

The currency of Myanmar is the Burmese Kyat. Although USD is accepted in many places, it's recommended to carry Kyats for convenience, especially in local markets. Unlike in the UK, credit and debit cards are not widely accepted outside of the international hotels.

To Conclude

Yangon is a charismatic city with a lot to offer. From its British historical sites to Buddhist pagodas, delicious street food, and charming parks. Get ready to create some beautiful memories, and drive safely!
