The Wattay International Airport is the main arrival point for international visitors to Laos. It's conveniently located just 3 km west of the capital city, Vientiane, making it your perfect entry point to this stunning land. From here, your hired car will take you to the city, the mountains, the jungle or your selected accommodation in no time.
Upon landing, you will find several car rental companies within the airport premises. It's recommended to choose well-established companies for security and reliability. Remember, driving in Laos is on the right hand side of the road, opposite from the UK.
Moving beyond the airport, Laos offers scenic drives that can rival the beauty of the British countryside. As a tropical country, the landscapes range from verdant greens of rice paddy fields to majestic mountains and hidden waterfalls. Starting your journey from Vientiane, a drive to the UNESCO World-Heritage city of Luang Prabang is a must.
Take note of road conditions and driving etiquette to determine the type of car to rent. Most roads in Laos are paved but beyond the major cities, rush hour can transform into 'dust hour'. An SUV is preferred for city to off-road transitions.
Unlike the familiar motorway stations in the UK, Laos fuel stations can be located at every other street in cities. When venturing into the countryside however, make sure to keep your tank sufficiently full. Prepare a journey map with fuel stations marked out to avoid running on empty at any point.
Navigating the currency, Lao kip, might seem a daunting cascade of large numbers, but a little mental maths will get you through. Also, it's hot in Laos! Yet the higher altitudes offer a break from the tropical heat, so pack accordingly.
Major cities like Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Pakse are connected by well-maintained highways which makes driving by hired car a feasible mode of transportation. While public transportation is much improved, car hire offers flexibility and convenience.
From the serene tranquillity of Vang Vieng to the bustling night markets in Luang Prabang, delight in the attractions awaiting you. Fill up your tank, tighten your seatbelt and get ready for a road trip that will create unforgettable memories.
