Peppered with spiritual sites, hot springs, and natural vistas, Wakayama is the spiritual heartland of Japan. This area is home to the sacred Koyasan mountain, the UNESCO World Heritage site and the breath-taking World Heritage Kumano Kodo pilgrimage route. It's also famous for its subtropical beaches, delightful pickled plums, fresh mikan (mandarin oranges), and the adventurous Wakayama Marina City.
Japan offers higher quality roads than you may be accustomed to in the UK. The majority of Japan, including Wakayama, has excellent road infrastructure, and the expressways are well-maintained and signposted in both Japanese and English.
You should note that Japan's speed limits may feel slower than those in the UK. Standard limits are usually 40-50 km/h in the city, 50-80 km/h outside built-up areas, and a maximum of 100 km/h on expressways. Remember to convert km/h to mph (1 km/h = 0.62 mph) for better understanding.
Mini, compact, economy, and standard cars are suitable for city driving. For something a bit sleeker, business and luxury class cars add a touch of sophistication to your trip. If you're planning on heading to the mountains or other natural sites, SUVs and wagons are excellent options.
Unlike in the UK where we drive on the left side of the road, in Japan, drivers keep to the left. If you're not used to this, it might take some time to adjust.
