In Portugal, as in the UK, you drive on the right side of the road. Thus, you'll find that the steering wheel is on the left-hand side of the car. The main difference, however, is in speed limits. In areas of Vila Real where there are no speed limit signs, the general rule is 50km/h in the cities and 90km/h on rural roads. But remember, it's always best to stay on the safe side and stick to the speed limit.
Depending on your itinerary, you may want to consider the type of car you hire. Compact cars are excellent for city driving, offering easy manoeuvrability and parking. However, if you're planning to visit the surrounding countryside or Douro Valley vineyards, consider a larger car or SUV for comfort.
Manual cars are more common in Portugal than automatic, and they're usually cheaper to rent. If you're comfortable driving a manual, you could save some money!
You'll find both on-street and off-street parking available in Vila Real. Some areas require a blue disc for parking, which can be obtained from local police stations or tourist offices. It's also recommended to read parking signs carefully to avoid fines.
Some of Vila Real's main attractions include the Mateus Palace, home to beautiful gardens and a fantastic wine cellar, and the Cathedral of Vila Real, a breath-taking example of Gothic architecture. Don't forget to drive through the Douro Valley, known for its stunning landscapes and vineyards.
The official currency is the Euro (€). The majority of places will accept card payments, but it is worth having some cash for smaller establishments or markets.
