In Finland, we drive on the right-hand side of the road, unlike in the UK where you're used to driving on the left. Keep this in mind, particularly when you’re at intersections or roundabouts. Plus, remember that wearing your seatbelt is always mandatory when you're in your car.
Within Vasa, the general speed limit is 50km/h (approx. 30 mph), in rural areas it's 80-100km/h (around 50-60 mph), and on motorways it goes up to 120km/h (just under 75 mph). Don't forget that there are quite a few speed cameras around, so it's worth sticking to the limits.
For a bustling city like Vasa, it's advisable to go for a compact or economy car. Narrow city streets and tight parking spots are much easier to navigate with a smaller vehicle. However, if you're planning on adventuring further into Finland's beautiful countryside, a SUV might be a more comfortable choice.
Much like most European cities, parking in the city centre might be a bit challenging. However, there are plenty of multi-storey car parks like Toriparkki and Rewell Center where you can park your car for a reasonable fee.
With your rental car, you're free to explore all that Vasa and its surroundings have to offer. Don't miss out on visiting the Kvarken Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site just a short drive from the city. For a family-friendly day out, head to Tropiclandia Water Park.
Finland has a subarctic climate, with cold winters and warm summers. Vasa sees plenty of daylight in the summer months, with almost 19 hours of sunshine at the peak of summer. The currency is the Euro (€).
While Vasa has plenty to offer, don't miss the opportunity to venture out to the surrounding towns with your rental car. Within a short drive, you can visit Mustasaari, a charming coastal town, or take a ferry trip from Vaasa to the picturesque island of Umea in Sweden.
Vasa is well connected by Vaasa Airport, just 10km from the city centre. There are also two railway stations, Vaasa and Vaskiluoto, offering connections to other Finnish cities.
We hope this guide helps you plan your trip and enhances your journey through Vasa in your rental car. Enjoy every moment and safe travels!
