Tulum is a city located directly on the Caribbean coast of the Gulf of Mexico and is about two hours away from Cancún Airport. Tulum is famous for its Ruinas de Maya and is especially popular for day trips from the tourist centers of Cancún and Playa del Carmen. If you are looking for a holiday with Mexican flair, Tulum is the right place! The dream beaches of Tulum are by far not as crowded as the neighboring beaches of the tourist hotspots.

Ruinas de Maya in Tulum

The most famous attraction in Tulum, which attracts many tourists from all over the world every day, are the Ruinas de Maya. This beautiful Mayan temple complex is located very near to the center of Tulum and is the only Mayan temple complex that was built directly on the water. A visit is most worthwhile in the early morning, thus before the extreme midday heat and the tourist rush from Cancún and Playa del Carmen. After your visit to the Mayan ruins, you and your companion can swim and cool off in the nearby dream beach directly in front of the iconic temples.

Coba: Maya-town close to Tulum

Besides the Ruinas de Maya and Chichen Itza, the nearby Mayan city of Coba is highly recommended. Especially comfortable at this place are that the various small temples are protected against the sun by trees. This makes a visit even at midday heat bearable and compared to the Ruinas de Maya in Tulum and Chichen Itza you can even climb the highest pyramid of the temple complex.

Driveboo tip:

Our recommendation: Coba is one of the few activities which you can easily do during the hot midday temperatures!

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza

Even the most famous Mayan temple in the world is easily accessible by hired car from Tulum. In approximately 2 hours from Tulum you can get to the Mayan temple via the road QR00 109. The temple complex is very well maintained and was already awarded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. For many Mexicans it is still considered the most important cultural heritage of their country. Please visit this place with respect for the Mayan people.
