Driving Routes
Nothing beats the freedom of exploring Tucson and its surroundings in your rental car. For a scenic drive, the Catalina Highway leading to the top of Mount Lemmon provides unrivalled views of the city and beyond. Fancy a day trip? The historic town of Tombstone is just over an hour's drive away.
Mobility and Parking
Renting a car is one of the best ways to navigate Tucson. The city is spread out, and having your own car ensures flexibility and convenience. There are ample parking lots and structures available around the city. Always remember to park with your vehicle's front facing the street, as 'combat parking' or parking against the flow of traffic is illegal in Arizona.
Speed Limits and Traffic Rules
It's important to know that in the U.S., speed limits are posted in miles per hour, not kilometres like in the UK. Traffic drives on the right-hand side, and you should always turn on your vehicle’s headlights if you are driving in the dark, or in rainy conditions. Right turns on red are usually permitted after a full stop, unless otherwise indicated.
Car Class Recommendations
We would recommend a compact or full-size vehicle for city trips and a SUV if you're planning to explore the desert and mountainous regions. The latter will also come handy if you plan on taking the Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway drive.
Climate
Tucson enjoys sunshine almost all year-round. Summers can be particularly hot with temperatures reaching over 100°F (38°C), while the winter months are milder with average high temperatures in the 60s°F (15 – 20°C). Be sure to pack your sunblock!
Currency
The local currency is the U.S. Dollar. ATMs are readily available and credit cards are widely accepted in most places.
