Driving in Trier can be a refreshing experience, diverging from the usual left-side driving in the UK. In Germany, we drive on the right side of the road. So remember, when on roundabouts, give way to traffic coming from the left!
If you're travelling in party groups or with family, go for the larger comfort cars or people carriers. Solo or duo travellers can opt for economy cars for getting around with ease.
Please note, Germany has a default urban speed limit of 50km/h (31mph) and rural speed limits of 100km/h (62mph). The Autobahn network, while renowned for parts without specific speed limit, recommends a 'sensible' speed of 130km/h (80mph).
Wearing seat belts is mandatory and driving drunk is severely punishable, with a permissible blood alcohol limit of only 0.05%.
Downtown Trier has quite a few parking garages, though parking in the city centre could become restrictive. A viable option is Park and Ride, available at several stations around the city outskirts.
Porta Nigra, Cathedral of Trier and Aula Palatina are must-visit historical structures. Drive along Moselle River, visiting lovely vineyards, or cruise through the scenic route connecting Trier and Koblenz.
Trier's atmospheric Old Town (Altstadt), bustling market square (Hauptmarkt), and Moselle River promenade are alluring for pleasant walks or drives. Surrounding cities like Luxembourg, Metz, Saarbrücken are within an hour's drive.
Germany uses Euro (€) as its currency. Most places accept credit cards but also ensure to carry some cash for small establishments or roadside vendors.
Trier's climate is fairly mild. During summer (Jun – Aug), temperatures range from 20°C to 25°C, perfect for wandering around & exploring vineyards. Winter markets in December are quite a joyful experience.
The nearest airport is Luxembourg Airport (49 km). Trier's Central Train Station (Trier Hauptbahnhof) is quite close to city centre. While there's no sea port, river cruises on Moselle River are quite popular among tourists.
Enjoy your trip to Trier and embrace the journey as you navigate through the stunning landscapes and historical richness of this city. Safe travels!
