Despite its small size, driving is the best way to explore Thasos. A well-maintained network of roads includes a coastal road circuit which provides easy access to all the island's towns and beaches. Traffic moves on the right-hand side of the road in Greece, a departure from the UK's left-hand driving. Do be aware that some rural roads may be less maintained, requiring a bit more caution.
For a small island, Thasos offers a big variety of landscapes. A compact car is ideal for town driving, especially in the narrow streets of Thasos town. If you plan to explore the mountainous interior, consider a car with more robust handling, like an SUV.
Most towns offer street parking. Some popular beaches have car parks, while others require a bit of a walk from the nearest road.
Thasos has a wealth of attractions to see. From the Ancient Agora in Thasos town, the beautiful sandy Paradise Beach, to the traditional mountain village of Theologos, there's plenty to discover. Plus, a drive around Thasos' coastal road is an attraction in its own right, offering stunning sea views all along the way.

The local currency is the Euro (€). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in towns and at the larger hotels and restaurants, but it's a good idea to have some cash for smaller establishments and for parking fees at some beaches.
Thasos enjoys a Mediterranean climate with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters. The warmest months are July and August, perfect for beach lovers. Spring and autumn offer milder weather, ideal for exploring the island's hiking trails and ancient ruins.
Thasos town (Limenas) is the island's main hub, with a harbour, museums and ancient ruins. Skala Potamia and Skala Panagia are popular for their golden beaches and crystal waters. For a quieter experience, try the traditional mountain villages of Theologos or Maries.
Like the rest of Greece, Thasos celebrates Easter in a big way. In summer, the island hosts several festivals, known as 'panigiria', with music, dancing and food. The Thasos Cultural Festival, held in September, features music, theatre and art.
Car hiring makes it easy to hop from beach to beach and explore this wonderful island at your own pace. Always remember to drive on the right-hand side and to be aware of your environment especially on narrow, mountainous roads. A hire car opens up the freedom of Thasos, allowing you to discover its hidden treasures and experience the hospitality of its locals. Thasos is waiting for you! Safe travels.
