Steeped in history but infused with a vibrant, modern-day energy, this Moroccan hotspot has much more to offer than just a picturesque landscape. From the bustling souks of Tangier, the magnificent palaces of Tétouan, to the tranquil charm of the Al Hoceïma region, untouched by mass tourism, you're bound to find something to excite you at every twist and turn.
Driving in Morocco can be quite a different experience than the UK. Moroccan roads vary greatly, from the hectic and narrow streets of old cities to the wide, well-maintained motorways. Note: driving is on the right-hand side of the road, opposite to those back home. Always take care, particularly at junctions where the right of way can be complex.
Speed limits are rigorously enforced in Morocco, with minimum fines starting at around 300 Moroccan dirhams. So keep an eye out for them: 60 km/h in urban areas, 100 km/h out of town, and 120 km/h on the motorways. Keep in mind that your UK driving licence is valid here for up to one year.
Considering the diverse terrains you might cross, rentals range from small city cars for darting around busy Tangier to 4WD vehicles to tackle Atlas mountain paths. A compact car will save you fuel and rental costs, but an SUV will fare better on rough terrains.
Topping the list are the busy, colourful markets in Tangier, the whitewashed old town (medina) of Tétouan, and the beautiful beaches of Al Hoceïma.
No visit to Morocco would be complete without sampling the local cuisine. Ensure to savour traditional Moroccan dishes like couscous, tagines and, of course, mint tea. All at prices that will pleasantly surprise the average UK tourist.
The Moroccan dirham (MAD) is the official currency. You'll be able to withdraw local currency from ATMs. Do carry some GBP as an emergency backup.
Whether stepping into the vibrant energy of a Moroccan city, climbing treacherous mountain paths, or basking in the sun on stunning beaches, Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceïma has it all. So, buckle up and bring on the adventure!
