Please remember that unlike in the UK, people in Bulgaria drive on the right-hand side of the road! Even seasoned British drivers may find this a little disorienting at first, but with time, it should become more familiar. When you're cruising around Sunny Beach and the surrounding areas, it's also important to stay aware of local speed limits. In urban areas, this is typically 50 km/h, whereas on motorways, the limit is 130 km/h.
As a popular tourist destination, Sunny Beach offers a variety of car classes for rent. For solo travellers or couples, compact cars offer an economical and convenient option. For families or larger groups, consider minivans or SUVs, which provide additional space and comfort. Luxury options are also available for those seeking a more upscale experience.
Sunny Beach is quite compact, which makes it easy to explore by car. Parking, however, can be quite a challenge during high season, especially near the beach. Consider parking a bit further out and taking a leisurely stroll into the centre.
There are lots of exciting attractions to explore in and around Sunny Beach. Get your tan on at the namesake beach, an 8 km stretch of golden sand, or dive into Bulgarian history and culture by visiting Burgas, the province's capital city. For a change of pace, drive out to Nessebar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famed for its beautiful ancient ruins and charming cobblestone streets.
The local currency is the Bulgarian Lev. Most businesses accept credit and debit cards, but it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments. Places usually offer fair exchange rates, but try to avoid changing money at the airport where rates are usually less favourable. Visit during the summer months to enjoy music and cultural events such as the Sunny Beach Fest and International Folklore Festival.
Blessed with a Mediterranean climate, Sunny Beach enjoys hot, dry summers and mild, rainy winters. Don't forget to pack your sunscreen and a sun hat!
