Driving in Germany: What's Different?

Driving on the Right

No more driving on the left! In Germany, we drive on the right-hand side of the road and the driver’s seat and controls are on the left-hand side of the vehicle. Make sure you familiarise yourself with this.

Speed Limits

Germany is famous for some of its Autobahn sections without speed limit. However, in Saxony-Anhalt, the recommended speed limit is 130 km/h (about 80mph), and in urban areas, the limit is typically 50 km/h (around 30mph).

Traffic Rules

Unlike in the UK, in Germany, if you're approaching a roundabout, vehicles on your left have the right of way.

Car Class Recommendations

While any car can allow you to enjoy Saxony-Anhalt's beauty, compact cars and sedans are most suitable for city trips due to their excellent fuel economy and parking ease. However, for countryside trips, an SUV or a car with higher clearance is advisable because of the occasional bumpy rural roads.

Currency and Banking

Germany uses the Euro (€), unlike the pound (£) in the UK. Remember, it's always helpful to have some cash as not every place accepts cards.
