Given the island's laid back atmosphere and relatively narrow roads, it's best to go for smaller, compact class cars for easy manoeuvrability. However, if travelling with family, you might want to consider a larger vehicle for that added comfort and luggage space.
Driving in Sant Francesc Xavier and Formentera at large is quite a spectacle. The island's road network is well laid out, making it easy for first-timers to navigate. However, it's important to bear in mind that unlike the UK, you'll be driving on the right-hand side of the road.
Standard speed limits here are quite straightforward: 120km/h on motorways, 90km/h on main roads and a blanket speed limit of 40km/h in urbanised areas including Sant Francesc Xavier. Always observe the posted speed limit signs to stay on the safe side of the law.
From Sant Francesc Xavier, you can easily access a string of pristine, sandy beaches, including Ses Illetes, Llevant and the wilder Migjorn on the southern side of the island. Visit La Mola Lighthouse, explore the historic Sa Pujada pathway, or simply bask in the charm of Sant Francesc Xavier's own historic landmarks like the fortified Church of Saint Francis Xavier.
Sant Francesc Xavier uses the Euro (€) as its official currency. Whilst most places accept credit and debit cards, it might be handy to have some cash especially for small purchases in local shops and cafes.
Sant Jaume (Saint James) the patron of Formentera is celebrated on the 24th and 25th July annually. The town fills with festivities, music and a traditional horse race. Further, the island is home to several arts and music festivals throughout the summer.
