Located right on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is the de facto gateway to the north, offering a unique blend of modern urban life and untouched wilderness. Closer to London than Lapland's far north, it still has a foot firmly in the snow with winter temperatures dropping as low as -30°C. But don't let that scare you away - it's just different from what you're used to in Britain.
From the moment you land at Rovaniemi Airport, there are numerous car rental services available. A medium-sized car or SUV is highly recommended as these can handle the snowy conditions better. Always remember to check if your rental comes with a block heater, vital for those cold winter mornings.
Driving in Finland is on the right-hand side, opposite to the UK, so please be mindful of this. The speed limits are strictly enforced and range from 50 km/h in built up areas to 80-120 km/h on highways. Don't forget that winter tyres are mandatory from November to April.
Some of the must-visit locations include Santa Claus Village where you can meet Santa himself, Arctic Circle where you can experience the phenomenal Northern Lights, and Ranua Wildlife Park - home to around 50 species of wild animals. Many of these attractions are outside the city and are easily accessible with a rental car.
Finland's climate is cold for most of the year, so pack plenty of warm clothes. The currency is the Euro (€), with most places accepting card payments, just like in Britain. Note that while Finland is in the Schengen Area, it's not part of NATO - so keep that in mind, it's just another difference from the UK.
Rovaniemi is packed with unforgettable experiences. With so many different places to explore, a rental car truly is your ticket to making the most of your holiday. Happy travels!
