Roseau, a small but bustling city, is perched on the edge of a tropical rainforest and boasts an array of wooden structures dating back to the 18th century. With colourful buildings, vibrant markets, and friendly locals, this city is a unique blend of history, nature, and culture.
Remember, driving in Dominica is on the left-hand side of the road, opposite to the system in Britain. Most of the roads are in good condition, however, some routes leading to areas of interest might be steep and winding, often with sudden sharp turns. Do not worry, Dominicans drive courteously, and the speed limit in built-up areas is mostly 40 km/h, slowing to a walking pace in crowded, narrow city streets.
Finding public parking in the city centre can be challenging due to limited slots. It's advisable to check if your accommodation provides parking or consider car parks around government offices which are less busy during weekends and after-work hours.
Given the terrain differences across Dominica, a compact-sized SUV is often a great option. It's perfect for navigating the city streets and equally adept at tackling the steeper, more challenging routes towards the countryside attractions.
Roseau offers a plethora of attractions that cater to every traveller's taste. Visit the Dominica Museum to get acquainted with the island's history and culture. For nature lovers, the Morne Trois Pitons National Park and Trafalgar Falls offer breathtaking views. Don't miss the fresh produce at the Roseau Market, where you can also sample local delicacies.
The main airport serving Roseau is the Douglas-Charles Airport, approximately an hour's drive from the city centre. There are also two ports, Roseau Cruise Ship Terminal and Woodbridge Bay Port, handling both cargo and passengers.
The year-round tropical climate makes Roseau a destination for all seasons. However, the most popular time to visit is between December and April, which is considered the dry season. Rainfall is much lighter during these months, making it the perfect time to explore outdoor attractions.
Take a scenic drive to Portsmouth, the second largest town in Dominica, to enjoy its historic sites, beautiful beaches and delicious seafood. Alternatively, drive to the Carib Territory, the only remaining settlement of the indigenous Carib people, for an unforgettable cultural experience.
We wish you a pleasant journey and an unforgettable holiday in Roseau!
