Driving in Rome can be an exhilarating experience: The city’s traffic can be chaotic, roads are often narrow, and yes, parking can be a challenge. However, having a rental car lets you travel at your own pace and grants you the freedom to explore outside the city centre. Remember, Italians drive on the right - opposite to the UK's left-hand traffic!
No two cars are the same, and the same can be said about driving experiences! Here are our car class recommendations:
Rome is divided into several "ZTL" (Zona a Traffico Limitato) or Limited Traffic Zones. Rental cars without permits are not allowed in these zones and fines can be hefty. It's best to plan your routes and parking locations wisely.
Rome’s historical centre is filled with world-renowned attractions, such as the Colosseum, Vatican City, and the Roman Forum. But the charm of Rome extends beyond these sites. Don’t miss vibrant neighbourhoods like Trastevere and enjoy a refreshing dip in the Mediterranean at Ostia, Rome's nearest beach.
Take advantage of Italy's well-marked road network and plan your driving routes. Consider scenic drives such as Via Appia Antica, one of the oldest roads in Rome, or the stunning coastal road between Rome and Naples.
Italian road rules can be different from the UK. Keep an eye out for speed limits (usually 50km/h in cities), always wear your seatbelt (front and back), and remember, the use of a mobile phone without a hands-free device is illegal!
Parking in Rome can be tricky. Most parking spaces in the city centre are paid, and free parking slots are rare. Consider using car parks and remember to validate your parking tickets!
Rome boasts a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Be prepared for some heat if you're planning your visit between June and August.
The local currency is the Euro, and card payments are widely accepted in Rome. ATMs and exchange offices are readily available throughout the city.
