A mid-sized car is ideal for navigating through Rio's busy streets, but an SUV might be better for those planning to venture into surrounding rural areas. Just remember, unlike in the UK, in Brazil we drive on the right and the driver's seat is on the left.
The speed limit in urban areas is 60 km/h, which can drop to 40 km/h in residential areas. On the highway, it can go up to 110 km/h. Traffic signs in Brazil are mostly intuitive, but keep an eye out for stop signs ('Pare'), one-way streets ('Mao Unica') and no parking signs ('Não Estacionar').
Most hotels offer parking services. However, in the city, street parking or 'Zona Azul' is regulated and requires buying a ticket from shops and kiosks. Prices range from R$2-5 per hour.
From Rio, scenic drives are aplenty. Drive along Costa Verde, a stunning route passing through rainforests and alongside secluded beaches. Or, head to Petroplis, a picturesque town known for its 19th-century architecture.
Don't miss Santa Teresa's bohemian vibe and Lapa's nightlife. Check out Barra da Tijuca for trendy restaurants and shopping options.
Rio de Janeiro–Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport, also known as Galeao Airport, is situated within easy driving distance from downtown Rio. Car rental services are readily available at the airport.
The currency is Brazilian Real (BRL), currently about 5.7 to a GBP. Card payments are widely accepted, but it's always handy to have some cash.
Rio's tropical climate means it's warm all year round. The city comes alive with spectacular events like Rio Carnival in February and Réveillon (New Year's Eve) celebrations on Copacabana beach.
With your rental car in tow, Rio de Janeiro promises an unforgettable journey in every sense. Safe travels!
