Quepos La Managua Airport (code XQP), situated in the tiny but bustling city of Quepos, on Costa Rica's Pacific coast, is the ultimate gateway to Manuel Antonio National Park. Though the airport is small, it hosts both domestic and international flights, providing convenient access to the stunning beaches, lush rainforests, and diverse wildlife Costa Rica is famous for.
Several trusted car hire companies have offices at Quepos La Managua Airport, including Avis, Budget and Thrifty. We recommend booking your rental car in advance to ensure availability and the best rates. Remember, driving on the right is standard practice here, different to back home. Moreover, be prepared for unpaved roads in certain areas.
For those planning to visit the National Park or other rural destinations, a 4x4 vehicle is highly advisable. For city driving, opt for a compact or mid-sized vehicle for ease of navigation and parking. Whichever you choose, make sure it has air conditioning – the tropical heat can be intense!
There are a couple of gas stations located within a 10km radius of the airport. It's worth noting that fuel prices are government-controlled and thus consistent across the country. For travelling to Manuel Antonio National Park, take the Route 618 - its scenic beauty epitomises the essence of Costa Rica!
The climate in Quepos is tropical, with highs reaching 32°C during the dry season (Dec - April) and plenty of rainfall during the green season (May - Nov). As for currency, the Costa Rican colón (₡) is the official one, but most places happily accept US dollars.
Not to be missed is the Manuel Antonio National Park, a mere 7km from the airport. Here, expect to see capuchin monkeys, three-toed sloths, and a plethora of birds! The park also boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica. Venturing a bit further, the Marina Pez Vela is a world-class yachting marina with a stunning sunset view.
Britain's plug type is different from Costa Rica's (Type A and B), so pack an adapter. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance that covers any adventure activities you plan to participate in. Lastly, while English is spoken in tourist areas, learning a few Spanish phrases will not only enhance your experience but will be greatly appreciated by the locals.
