Car Rental at The Airport

Hiring a car is a great way to gain the freedom and flexibility to explore Jordan on your own terms. There are several car rental agencies located at the airport, including international brands like Hertz, Avis and Europcar. Just make sure you bring your driving licence and credit card with you.

Car Class Recommendations

Given the diverse terrains in Jordan, a compact or economy car is suitable for city driving in Amman. An SUV would be more appropriate for those planning to venture into the desert landscapes of Wadi Rum or the mountainous regions.

Getting Around Jordan

Driving in Jordan may feel slightly different from what you're used to in the UK. For example, you should be aware of the following:

  • Road signs are mostly in Arabic and English, but direction signs can sometimes be lacking, particularly in rural areas.
  • Unlike the UK, where driving is on the left side of the road, in Jordan, people drive on the right.
  • The general speed limit is 50 km/h in urban areas and between 60-100 km/h on highways.

Currency Essentials

The local currency in Jordan is the Jordanian Dinar (JOD). Take note that only major hotels and restaurants accept credit cards. Therefore, carrying enough cash for small purchases and in case of emergencies is recommended.

Exploring the Environs

When you're ready to hit the road, there are several interesting cities close to Queen Alia International Airport. Madaba, known as the 'City of Mosaics', is just a 20-minute drive away. Alternatively, you could head to the ancient city of Petra, a must-visit UNESCO World Heritage site, which is approximately a 3-hour drive.

Local Climate

Jordan has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters. Make sure you pack accordingly, and don't forget the sunscreen!
