The Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport is the main airport of the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region, and it's located at Punta Arenas city. The airport got its name from a former Chilean President, and today it's one of the largest airports in Chile.
Various regional airlines operate at this airport, connecting it with many local and international cities. This makes it a focal point for tourists looking to explore the attractions of this southernmost region of the world.
You'll find several car rental companies operating at Presidente Carlos Ibáñez Del Campo International Airport. Most of these, including big names such as Hertz and Budget, have offices located in the arrivals hall of the airport.
Most tourists choose economy or compact cars for city drives. However, if you're planning to explore the outskirts and some rugged terrains around, we recommend renting a 4x4 vehicle for a safer and smoother drive.
The airport is about 20 km away from the city centre. You can reach downtown Punta Arenas by heading south-east on Ruta Nueve. The drive usually takes around 20 minutes. To explore the surrounding area, follow the signs to Ruta 9, which runs north to Puerto Natales and the Torres del Paine National Park.
In Chile, driving is on the right-hand side of the road, opposite to the UK, so ensure you get comfortable before taking long trips. It's mandatory to wear seatbelts and, unlike in the UK, it's prohibited to use a mobile phone when driving, even if it's hands-free.
Chile uses the Chilean Peso (CLP), and it's always useful to have some cash handy for tolls and parking, though major credit cards are widely accepted. Don’t forget to inform your bank about the probable foreign transaction before you travel.
Unlike the UK, the climate in southern Chile is quite extreme with regular winds and cold temperatures even in summers. Dress up in layers to stay warm, and don’t forget to pack waterproof outer layers.
A rental car allows you to explore attractions in the vicinity at your own pace. The colourful city of Punta Arenas is nearby, known for its colonial architecture. A little further far is Torres del Paine National Park, home to glaciers, lakes, and rare wildlife.
Your adventure in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region awaits. Prepare for a journey filled with breathtaking scenery and unique experiences. We hope this guide provides useful information for your forthcoming trip. Safe travels!
