Driving in Porto District

Understanding the Rules

Always remember that unlike in the UK, in Portugal, traffic drives on the right-hand side. Seat belts are obligatory for everyone in the car. Children under 12 years or shorter than 135 cm must travel in the back seats using an appropriate child restraint system. Also, it's illegal to drive whilst using a mobile, unless you're using hands-free equipment.

Speed Limits

In urban areas, the speed limit is typically 50 km/h. On main roads, it's 90 km/h, and on highways, it's generally 120 km/h.

Porto District is known for Porto city, its capital, renowned for unwinding alleyways, traditional taverns and the emblematic Dom Luís I Bridge. Other must-visit places include Aveiro, Braga, and Guimarães. Whilst touring on your rental car, enjoy the countryside filled with vineyards, coastal cliffs, and mountainous parks.

Local Currency

In Portugal, the official currency is the Euro (€). It's advisable to keep enough Euros for tolls as not all tollbooths accept cards.

Climate

Porto District enjoys a Mediterranean climate, meaning mild winters and warm summers. Even in peak summer, temperatures rarely exceed 30°C, making outdoor explorations quite comfortable.

A compact class car is recommended due to the narrow streets in Porto city. However, if you plan to drive more in rural areas or with larger groups, a larger car or an SUV might be a better option.
