Located in the state of Colima, Mexico, Playa de Oro International Airport (ZLO) serves the city of Manzanillo and the surrounding areas. The airport name translates to "Golden Beach", aptly referring to the area's scenic coastlines.
Renting a car is an excellent way to explore the area at your own pace. There are several car rental companies operating directly at Playa de Oro International Airport including Hertz, Avis and Europcar. It's worth noting that unlike in the UK, an International Driving Permit alongside your UK driving license is required to hire a car in Mexico.
The airport, though small, offers all the necessary facilities including a restaurant, souvenir shops, and comfortable waiting areas.
The nearest fuel stations are Pemex stations, located a short drive both north and south of the airport. Mexico uses unleaded petrol (gasolina) which may be a change if you're used to referring to it as 'petrol' back in the UK!
The airport is conveniently located near Highway 200, which runs along the coast and offers beautiful views. Taking this highway southwards will take you to resorts and beaches of Manzanillo, approximately a 40-minute drive.
The area around Playa de Oro International Airport enjoys a tropical climate, with warm temperatures year-round, a significant contrast to the unpredictable British weather. The currency is the Mexican Peso (MXN) and it's advisable to have some cash handy for small expenses. ATMs are widely available, including at the airport.
You are now in the state of Colima, home to bustling markets, historic architecture, and beautiful landscapes. The city of Manzanillo, a paradise for beach lovers, and the capital city of Colima, offering a mix of history and culture, are definitely worth a visit.
We hope this guide helps to ensure a smooth start to your adventure. Safe travels!
