Phnom Penh International Airport, being the largest airport in Cambodia, is the welcome portal for the majority of international travellers. Equipped with modern facilities and providing an array of services, it effectively bridges the gap for any initial discomfort generally found in an alien land.

Car Rental Stations

Pivotal to your voyage, the airport hosts a number of car rental stations from reputed agencies like Avis, Hertz and Europcar. These agencies offer an extensive range of vehicles, from luxury cars to economical options. Though driving is on the right-hand side in Cambodia, much like the rest of mainland Europe, automatic cars are available for ease of travel.

Fueling Up

There are multiple petrol stations, just a short drive from the airport. 'Sokimex', a local favourite, is open throughout the day and night. Always remember to carry cash as many petrol stations do not accept card payments.

Commute and Connectivity

Highways 3 and 4 provide the principal connectivity from the airport to downtown Phnom Penh. Best to avoid rush hours (7-8 am and 4.30-6 pm), as traffic can be dense during these periods.

Currency and Transactions

The Cambodian Riel (KHR) is the official currency, but USD is widely accepted, excluding coins. ATMs are plenty and dispense USD. However, we'd recommend maintaining a stash of small denominations for easy transactions, especially at toll booths and petrol stations.

Climate

Cambodia experiences warm climate all through the year. Remember to stay hydrated and carry sun protection. Meanwhile, the monsoon (May to October) demands driving caution, particularly in rural areas.

Noteworthy Proximities

  • Phnom Penh: The city promises a vivid cultural experience with its grand Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, and the emotional Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum.
  • Sihanoukville: A beach lover's paradise, Sihanoukville is just a scenic 4-hour drive from the capital.

Explore freely and embrace the unfamiliar, beautiful landscapes of Cambodia from your hired car, beginning right from Phnom Penh International Airport.
