Enthusiastically referred to as Tocumen International Airport, you’ll find it based in Tocumen, 24km from the heart of Panama City. It's not just Panama's leading international gateway, but also the busiest airport in the country and Central America's largest and most connected airport.
Panama has a tropical climate with hot, humid and cloudy weather. You can expect daily rains between May to December, while January to April is generally drier. So don't forget to pack your rain gear and sunscreen!
The airport hosts international car rental companies including Alamo, Hertz, and Budget. After collecting your luggage, you can easily find rental car stations on the ground floor adjacent to the airport terminal.
Car Rental Company | Location |
---|---|
Alamo | Ground Floor |
Hertz | Ground Floor |
Budget | Ground Floor |
Driving in Panama City is on the right-hand side, a difference from the UK's lefty roads. The main motorway from the airport to the city centre, the Corredor Sur, is well maintained and signposted. A good sat nav can help you navigate your way smoothly. Don't forget, the steering wheel will be on the left.
The currency used in Panama is the Panamanian Balboa and the US Dollar, different from the British Pound. Credit cards are widely accepted in most urban areas, but it's advisable to carry a small amount of cash for off-the-beaten-path escapes.
With your rental car, the possibilities to explore are endless. Visit the Panama Canal or drive through the beautiful Casco Viejo. For a beach day, head to Playa Coronado or Playa Blanca, both within a 2-hour drive from the airport.
From Panama City Airport, your amazing adventure in Panama starts. Whether you're exploring the city, heading to the beach or discovering the jungle, a rental car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
