While Oxford is a relatively compact city, a rental car can prove immensely useful, particularly if you're seeking to explore the picturesque surrounding countryside. It's important to note that Oxford operates a 'Controlled Parking Zone', restricting parking within the city centre between 8 AM and 6.30 PM. Plenty of well-signed Pay and Display car parks are available outside this zone.
Driving in Oxford will be a familiar experience to those used to British roads. You'll drive on the left-hand side and the speed limit is typically 30 mph in built-up areas, 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Roundabouts are common, as are older, narrow streets within the city centre. Be aware that many streets can be busy with cyclists and pedestrians.
Given the city's narrow streets, compact cars are recommended for smooth navigation within Oxford. However, if you're planning to explore Oxfordshire's wide-open spaces, an SUV might provide a more comfortable and spacious ride.
For a great drive, head out on the A40 towards the Cotswolds, one of the UK's 'Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty'. Explore quaint villages constructed from the local honey-coloured stone and meander along scenic roads through mesmerising landscapes towards Bletchingdon and Enstone.
Oxford is renowned for its prestigious University, boasting stunning architecture and a rich history. Don't miss the Radcliffe Camera, the Ashmolean Museum or the Bodleian Library. The city is also home to charming tea rooms and quirky pubs plus a lively food and drink scene.
Summers in Oxford are typically mild to warm, with July and August being the warmest months, perfect for exploring the city's beautiful outdoor spaces. Winters can be cold, with sporadic snowfall. A rental car can help you navigate any weather conditions smoothly.
Your rental car enables you to explore more of what Oxfordshire and beyond has to offer. Blenheim Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and birthplace of Winston Churchill, is just a 20-minute drive. The ancient White Horse of Uffington and the quaint market town of Thame are other worthwhile visits.
As in the rest of UK, the currency of Oxford is the British Pound (£). It's always wise to have some cash handy for car parks or small village shops that may not accept cards.
We hope this guide has given you some tips to enhance your Oxford adventure. Enjoy exploring this gem of a city with your hire car, at your own pace!
