Conveniently located just 7km from Ohrid town centre, St. Paul the Apostle Airport is the second biggest in Macedonia. Named after the biblical apostle Paul, this airport has a single terminal and operates flights predominantly during summer, catering to the influx of tourists eager to explore Ohrid’s UNESCO listed world heritage sites.
The best way to discover Ohrid is undoubtedly by car, and luckily, St. Paul the Apostle Airport hosts several car rental companies right at the terminal. You'll find world-renowned firms like Avis, Europcar, and Enterprise.
TIP: Make sure your licence is in the Roman alphabet or bring an International Driving Permit, as non-roman licences are not recognized.
Driving in Macedonia differs from the UK - cars drive on the right-hand side! It’s a quick adjustment, but requires extra vigilance, especially at intersections. The A2 highway is the fastest way to reach the Ohrid town centre from the airport. Don't worry if you stray off route; driving around the beautiful Lake Ohrid is a treat anyway!
Macedonia's currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). While some places accept euros, it's safer to have denars on you. ATMs are available at the airport, but withdrawing money can incur high fees. To avoid these, consider exchanging money before you travel or using a currency exchange service at the airport.
Macedonia's weather is quite different from the UK’s. Winters in Ohrid are mild with an average temperature of 4.2°C, while summers are warm with averages around 23.9°C. It’s best to pack for the season you’re travelling in!
If you want to take a break from Ohrid, consider driving to nearby cities. Bitola, Macedonia's second largest city, is about 71 km away and is home to the Heraclea Lyncestis, an important archaeological site. Or take a scenic 130 km drive to the capital, Skopje, boasting a stunning blend of Ottoman and Byzantine architecture.
Embarking on a trip to Ohrid, Macedonia is a thrilling prospect. With a hired car at your disposal, you can freely explore this charming city and its surrounding delights. We wish you a memorable journey!
