In Canada, unlike in the UK, we drive on the right-hand side of the road. Roads and junctions might have different designs, so stay alert. The speed limits are in kilometres per hour, not miles per hour.
Also, remember that British Columbia has strict drink-driving laws, with a limit of 0.05% BAC. If you're not used to calculating in BAC units, it's safest not to drink at all when you plan to drive.
Upon arrival, you'll find car rental stations at the airport from brands like Avis, Budget and Hertz. They offer a range of cars from compact models to large SUVs. Given the rugged terrain of British Columbia, a 4x4 might be a good choice if you plan to explore beyond city limits.
There are several petrol stations near the airport such as Chevron and Petro-Canada. As in the UK, you pay after fuelling. But be prepared to do this at the pump: self-service is the norm in Canada.
To reach the nearby town of Terrace, it’s a short drive of 11 kilometres east along Highway 16. If you're heading to Kitimat, take Highway 37 south for 56 kilometres.
Canada's currency is the Canadian Dollar (CAD), so don’t forget to exchange your British Pounds. Summers are mild with temperatures rarely above 26°C, but winters can be very cold, especially at night.
While here, don’t miss out on exploring the mesmerising wilderness, the local Indigenous culture at 'Ksan Historical Village, or the winter activities at Shames Mountain Ski Area.
So, pack your bags, book your ride, and get ready to drive around British Columbia, one of the most stunning locations on Earth. Welcome to your next great adventure!
