Located in the southeast of Serbia, Nišava District is home to rich cultural heritage and breathtaking landscapes. While the district's main city Niš is the third largest in Serbia, the roads are less congested compared to the buzz of London's traffic.
Unlike the UK, Serbia practises right-hand driving. Switching driving sides can be initially challenging, but with a little practice, it's quickly mastered.
Like the UK, Serbia uses kilometre per hour (km/h), not miles per hour. In built-up areas, the speed limit is usually 50km/h. Outside towns, you're allowed to go up to 80km/h. On expressways and motorways, the maximum speed is 100km/h and 120km/h respectively. Be cautious as speed limits are strictly enforced.
An economy class car is perfect for solo or minimalist travellers, while sedans and station wagons offer abundance space for family travel. SUV’s are excellent choices for adventurous souls due to the varied terrains of Nišava.
Parking zones in Nišava are divided into three zones - red, yellow, and green. Remember the parking tickets need to be purchased from kiosks or can be paid via SMS.
Nišava District is packed with attractions. Visit Niš Fortress, Skull Tower, and numerous iconic monasteries. The Mediana archaeological site holds remnants of a grand villa from the Roman period. The Bubanj Memorial Park, dedicated to the victims of WWII, is a significant historical site. Scenic hikes and nature reserves such as Jelašnica Gorge are worth visiting.
While in Nišava, enjoy Serbia's local cuisine. From the national dish, pljeskavica (Serbian burger), to burek (pastry) for breakfast, your taste buds are in for a treat. The Rakija, a homemade fruit brandy, is a must-try.
Beyond the bustling streets of Nišava lies a wealth of history, culture, and gastronomy awaiting discovery. Your hired car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, creating unique memories of Serbia. Embrace the adventure!
