Newcastle offers effective public transport with busses, trams, and metros. But renting a car gives that extra bit of freedom to truly experience the picturesque surroundings at your own pace. Just remember, in Newcastle, we drive on the left side of the road, and the gear shift is likely on your left hand side too.
Finding parking in the city centre can be a challenge. We recommend private car parks or 'Park and Ride' service from metro stations. The general speed limit is 30 mph in built-up areas, moving up to 60 mph on single carriageways and 70 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Don't forget to follow the traffic rules such as always wearing your seatbelt and following the drink-drive limits.
From historical sites to entertainment hotspots; Newcastle has it all. You can't miss visiting The Tyne Bridge, Grey's monument, and the historic Quayside. Newcastle is also home to several beautiful parks like Jesmond Dene and Exhibition Park.
Drive around iconic neighborhoods like Grainger Town with its stunning architecture, Ouseburn Valley, the city’s cultural hub, or Jesmond, known for its charming cafes and boutique shops.
Ideal for day trips! Visit Sunderland for its beautiful beaches, or Durham, home to the breathtaking Durham Cathedral and Castle.
Brace up for the North East weather! Newcastle experiences cold winters and mild summers. The best time to visit is between June and September when you can expect temperatures averaging around 15°C.
Remember, we use Pound Sterling (£) in Newcastle, and tipping is a common practice, though not mandatory.
Check out cultural festivals like Newcastle International Film Festival, Newcastle Jazz Festival, and Newcastle Science Comic.
For city drives, a compact class would be ideal for easy navigation. For a family trip, consider an SUV or a Minivan for a comfortable journey.
