Depending on your travel group size and plans, a compact or intermediate car should be sufficient. However, if you're travelling in the winter and plan on venturing into the snowy parts of Hokkaido, consider a 4WD for better traction.
Directly connected to the airport is the Hokkaido Expressway. This toll road can take you either northwards to Sapporo or eastwards to other cities of interest like Furano and Kitami. Be aware that the Japanese drive on the left side of the road, like we do in the UK.
Petrol stations can be located quite conveniently on the way from the airport. Do note that in Japan, gas station attendants fill the vehicle for you!

Hokkaido's climate varies with cold, snowy winters and warm, temperate summers. If you're visiting in the winter, prepare for snowy roads and chilly temperatures, while summer visitors can look forward to long, sunny days.
