Designated Myanmar's capital in 2006, Naypyidaw is a well-planned, spacious city, quite unlike any other in Southeast Asia. Wide roads, orderly city layout, vast roundabouts, it's perhaps the most comfortable city in Myanmar for driving.
In Myanmar, you drive on the right side of the road which may take a bit of adjusting for Brits used to left-side driving. Speed limits in urban areas are typically around 30-35 km/h (roughly 20 mph).
One of the first things you'll notice is the lack of traffic. The 20-lane highway leading to the Parliament has an eerily empty feel, but this makes for an easy driving experience. Pit-stops worth making include Uppatasanti Pagoda, National Museum and Naypyidaw Water Fountain Garden.
Car parks are abundant and free of charge. Plus, parking isn't a concern with sidewalks wide enough to park on - an unusual but convenient perk of renting a car in Naypyidaw.
Comfort and moderate luggage capacity make a mid-size car a great choice for Naypyidaw. Do ensure that your rental includes insurance, considering the unusual right-side driving.
The local currency is called Kyat (pronounced ‘Chat’). While credit cards are accepted in some large hotels and restaurants, it's worth keeping enough cash for smaller establishments and fuel stations.
Naypyidaw has a tropical monsoon climate. October to February are the best months to visit when the weather is cooler and drier.
Despite being a relatively new city, Naypyidaw has a growing population, with locals who are warm and welcoming to visitors. English is not widely spoken, but the friendly locals are always ready to help.
With a car rental, you’re free to venture beyond Naypyidaw. Take the road to Mandalay, the old royal capital, or drive south to Pyinmana and Tatkon, old towns steeped in history.
Get ready to make the most of your Myanmar experience with a rental car in Naypyidaw!
