Nakhon Si Thammarat, or Nakhon as it's known by locals, is a province in southern Thailand. It's a blend of the old and new, with Buddhist temples sitting peacefully amidst bustling markets and coffee shops. Nothing beats watching the sunrise over the Gulf of Thailand or venturing into the lush rainforest, full of exotic bird life and waterfalls.

Driving in Thailand Vs The UK

While there may be differences between driving in the UK and Thailand, with a little preparation, navigating Thai roads will become a breeze.

Driving on the 'other' side

Unlike in the UK, Thais drive on the right-hand side of the road. Your rental car will also have the driver's seat and controls on the left.

International Driving Permit

You'll need to obtain an International Driving Permit (IDP) to drive in Thailand, available pre-travel from most Post Offices across the UK. You must carry this alongside your UK driving licence at all times.

Speed Limits

Speed limits vary depending on the road and area, ranging from 50km/h in cities to 90 km/h on rural roads and 120 km/h on motorways. Note these are in km/h, not mph!

Car Rental Tips

Choose the Right Car

A good car for exploring Nakhon's urban areas is a compact class, for easy manoeuvring and parking. However, an SUV might be more suitable for rural adventures.

Car Hire Insurance

Ensure your rental car comes with full insurance, as basic insurance often doesn't cover all potential incidents.

Attractions to Explore by Car

With your own set of wheels, the province is your oyster. Here are some must-see spots:

  • Wat Phra Mahathat: A stunning Buddhist temple dating back to 311 AD. It's home to The Great Stupa, believed to contain a tooth of Buddha.
  • Khanom Beach: Offers crystal clear waters, soft sand, and if you're lucky, pink dolphins!
  • Khao Luang National Park: A naturally rich park with breathtaking waterfalls and abundant wildlife. A nature lover's paradise.

Closing Tips

Currency

Thailand's currency is the Baht (THB). Many shops and restaurants accept cards, but having cash on hand is useful for markets and smaller establishments.

Climate and Clothing

Nakhon sees tropical weather with year-round temperatures averaging 28°C. Pack light clothing, but remember to dress modestly when visiting temples.

Local Etiquette

The Thai people are known for their friendliness and manners. Greet with the traditional 'Wai' (a slight bow with palms pressed together), and remember to take your shoes off before entering someone's home or a temple.

Thailand waits for you. Get ready for an incredible journey in Nakhon Si Thammarat!
