In Monastir, as in the rest of Tunisia, driving is on the right-hand side of the road. This is the opposite of the UK, where driving is on the left. It’s important to pay attention to this difference, especially when turning or negotiating roundabouts.

Road Conditions

Most of the roads in Tunisia are reasonably well maintained, maintaining a standard comparable to what you might experience in the UK. However, secondary roads can be in poor conditions, so bear this in mind when choosing your rental car.

Car Class Recommendation

In general, a compact car class will be more than sufficient. These cars are perfect for city driving and comfortable enough for longer trips.

Parking and Mobility

Parking in Monastir is relatively easy and cost-effective. There are quite numerous car parks and metered zones. Meters generally operate between 8am-12pm and 2-6pm and parking is free overnight.

Sights and Attractions

Top attractions in Monastir include Ribat, a fortified monastery, and Mausoleum of Habib Bourguiba, a former president of Tunisia. The Monastir Marina and Monastir beach are also beautiful places to visit.

Local Weather

Monastir enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wet winters, which is contrary to the UK's weather. July is the warmest month with average high temperatures of 33°C.

Currency

The local currency is the Tunisian Dinar(TND). Credit cards are widely accepted in hotels and restaurants, however, for smaller businesses and attractions, it's advisable to carry cash.

Nearby Cities

If you're in for a road trip, the city of Sousse is just 20 kilometers away and offers yet another glimpse of the rich Tunisian culture and history.

Arrival - Airport and Stations

Car hire is available at Monastir Habib Bourguiba International Airport and from various locations in the city. The city is also connected by rail, so picking up your rental car from the Monastir train station is an option.

With all this in mind, we're sure you’ll have a fantastic time exploring Monastir and the surrounding areas in your rental car. Happy Driving!
