Misawa Air Base is not just a military facility, but also has a civil airport that serves as a gateway to the northernmost prefecture on Japan’s main island - Aomori. The airport is of particular historic significance, as it's from here that two Seversky P-35 aircraft took off to make the first successful transpacific flight in 1939. Today, it offers inbound travellers a selection of car rental options for their onward journey.
Upon landing, you'll find car rental desks conveniently located in the Arrivals area. You'll have a choice of several international and local car rental companies offering a wide range of vehicles. Please bear in mind that in Japan, you drive on the left side of the road, just like in the UK. However, unlike the UK, most cars in Japan are automatic, so be prepared for that.
Planning your first trip from the airport? There are several petrol stations located within a short distance from Misawa Air Base, perfect if you're looking to fill up before hitting the road. Remember, in Japan it's a self-service operation unlike the UK.

Misawa City is less than a 30-minute drive from Misawa Air Base. For those heading further afield, the Tohoku Expressway offers a direct route south towards the bustling city of Morioka approximately 2.5 hours away. If you're planning to venture north, Aomori, the prefectural capital, is reachable in under 2 hours via the Kamikita Expressway.
Japan has a temperate climate and Misawa is no exception. It experiences a humid climate with warm summers and snowy winters. Remember to adjust your driving in accordance to the weather conditions.
