Public transport is not wide-spread in the rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, hence we recommend you to rent a car for your stay. Several well-known, reliable car hire companies, such as Avis and Budget, have desks at the airport, offering a variety of vehicles to suit your needs.
Unlike the UK, South Africa drives on the left-hand side of the road, a custom that should come easily to you. However, the speed limit might be a change: they are generally set at 60km/h in residential areas, 100km/h on national roads, and 120km/h on freeways, and are strictly enforced. Your UK driving license will suffice in South Africa, so no need for an International Driving Permit!
Your rented car will likely come with a full tank, but remember, petrol stations are not as frequent as in the UK. Several petrol stations are available in the town of Margate and along National Road R61 which connects Margate with the nearby cities of Port Shepstone and Shelly Beach. They operate 24 hours a day, but unlike in the UK, self-service is not common, with attendants filling up cars and taking payment.
South Africa's currency is the Rand (ZAR), and while credit cards are widely accepted in Margate, it’s wise to carry some cash for tips, markets and smaller businesses. There are several banks and ATMs in Margate's town centre.
The coastal and subtropical climate in Margate presents average temperatures between 20–28 degrees Celsius year round, so pack lightweight and breathable clothing. However, do remember to pack a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings!
Now that you're prepared for your arrival at Margate Airport, we hope you enjoy all that KwaZulu-Natal has to offer. From the golden beaches of Margate to the verdant surrounds of the Oribi Gorge Nature Reserve, to the vibrant hustle of Durban's city streets, there's a scenic drive awaiting at every turn.
