Located in the picturesque Sierra Nevada, Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) may be small, but it offers direct access to some of the most stunning natural beauties in California. As soon as you arrive, you'll feel the anticipation building for what promises to be an epic trip.
Renting a car is the easiest way to get around and explore at your leisure. You'll find rental car counters in the terminal. Driving here isn't too different from the UK - apart from driving on the right side of the road. Remember, the driver's seat in American cars is on the left!
There are several petrol stations nearby, including a Chester's and a K Chevron, both less than 10 minutes' drive from the airport. Unlike the UK, it's typically self-service at American petrol stations, so prepare to fill up your tank yourself.
Driving routes here are breathtaking. Whether you're winding your way around mountain curves or cruising along scenic straightaways, every journey in this slice of California is a joy.
State Route 395 is the main road in and out of Mammoth Yosemite, connecting you to cities such as Bishop, Carson City, and Reno. For a truly magical drive, head to Yosemite via the Tioga Pass (open May–November) which offers spectacular high-altitude scenery. Just take note that unlike the UK, overtaking is allowed on both sides in the US!
A compact car will serve you well in the city, but if you plan to explore the region's ample outdoor offerings, consider renting an SUV or a car with four-wheel drive, especially during winter.
The town of Mammoth Lakes is just 10 minutes away and offers skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and more. From there, it's an easy trip to landmark destinations like Yosemite National Park and Death Valley National Park.
California boasts a Mediterranean-style climate, with warm, dry summers and mild, wet winters - a stark contrast to the UK's often unpredictable weather. You'll need your sunscreen for sure!
The currency of America is the United States Dollar (USD). Major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere, and ATMs are readily available. Keep in mind that you won't find the chip and pin system you're used to in the UK - most places use a chip and signature system instead.
With the wind in your hair, the open road before you, and a multitude of sights to see, your Californian adventure is sure to be unforgettable. Buckle up and enjoy the ride!
