Lusaka International Airport, renamed as Kenneth Kaunda International Airport, is located 27 kilometers from the city centre. It's the largest airport in Zambia and serves as the primary hub for domestic and international travel.
Upon arrival, you'll find numerous car rental stations in the terminal building. Brands like Avis, Budget, Europcar, and Hertz are available, offering a wide range of vehicles to suit your needs. Whether you fancy a compact car for city driving or a sturdy 4x4 to traverse Zambia's rugged terrain, you'll find it here.
For city driving around Lusaka, we recommend choosing a compact car for its fuel efficiency and easy manoeuvrability. If you plan to venture out into rural areas or national parks, a 4x4 is a better choice for its ability to navigate rough terrains.
There are a couple of petrol stations located within a 10-minute drive from the airport - ideal for refuelling before you start your journey or return your rental car. Please note that unlike in the UK, petrol stations in Zambia might not be open 24/7, so plan your refuel accordingly.
The airport provides easy access to major roads leading to Lusaka city centre and other towns. From the airport, you can use the Great East Road to reach the city centre, approximately a 30-minute drive.
Zambia experiences a tropical climate, so it's warmer than the UK. Be prepared for hotter temperatures, especially during the summer months from September to November.
The currency in Zambia is the Zambian kwacha (ZMW). ATMs and currency exchange facilities are available at the airport.
Lusaka itself has a lot to offer from shopping malls, museums to wildlife parks. For travellers who want to venture out, the city of Livingstone, home to the spectacular Victoria Falls, can reached in about 6 hours by car.
We hope this guide will help make your travel experience even smoother. Happy travels!
