As the largest and busiest airport in Gabon, Libreville International Airport, officially known as Léon-Mba International Airport, is likely to be your first experience of Gabon. Situated 11 km from Libreville city centre, it opens the door to the colourful blend of traditional African culture and modern urban life that characterises the country. Having undergone significant improvements in recent years, it offers a reliable and efficient service to its international travellers.
This modern airport consists of a single terminal building which houses separate sections for domestic and international flights. Immigration could be a little slow, so be prepared for a little wait, especially on busy days. ATMs and currency exchange desks are available if you need CFA francs, the local currency.
There are several car rental companies operating out of Libreville International Airport, offering a range of vehicles to suit all travel needs. Remember when renting a vehicle that driving is on the right-hand side of the road in Gabon, opposite to the UK, so you may need to adjust to this difference.
Petrol stations are plentiful in Libreville, with the nearest being just a brief drive from the airport. Please note that fuel is sold by the litre in Gabon, unlike in the UK where it's sold by the gallon.
Gabon exhibits a tropical climate, with rainy seasons from October to November and February to May. As a Brit, this might feel quite different from the UK's climate. If you're planning to explore beyond the city, we recommend hiring a 4x4 due to the sometimes rugged terrain and rainy conditions. And remember, you'll need a good road map as signposting is not always clear or consistent.
Libreville, the capital of Gabon, is just a short drive away and offers beaches, markets, and a vibrant nightlife. Rent a comfortable city car if this cosmopolitan city is your primary destination. In contrast, if your adventure extends to Gabon's incredible National Parks or the more rural areas, a 4x4 is advisable. Remember to always carry a copy of your passport and driving licence while driving.
From Libreville International Airport, it's a straightforward drive into the city of Libreville. TheACR are reliable. For long journeys, it's best to plan your route in advance.
Happy travels and enjoy your African adventure!
