Kozani National Airport, otherwise known as Filippos Airport, is a small yet charming airport located 4 km south of Kozani city centre. While it might not be as bustling as some of the larger airports, its size gives it a quaint charm and allows for a hassle-free experience. The airport handles primarily domestic flights, providing easy access to rest of Greece. Although less frequented by Brits, Kozani Airport is a hidden gem waiting to be explored!
Kozani National Airport houses a multitude of car rental companies, ensuring there’s a vehicle available to suit every traveller’s requirements. Remember, driving in Greece is on the right-hand side of the road, a shift from the UK, but this minor adjustment is quickly made. Opt for a small car if you plan on exploring the narrow city streets, or maybe an SUV if adventuring into the beautiful Greek countryside.
Several petrol stations are conveniently located near the airport - a particularly handy note for when returning your hire car. They open mostly around 6:30 am, providing plenty of time to refuel before your return flight.
With your hire car, the city of Kozani is a mere 15-minute drive via Route 15. For those heading towards the sandy beaches of Veria, take Route 3 and expect a pleasant hour's drive through scenic landscapes. A GPS navigation system is advised to aid with journey times and directions.
Relish in the Mediterranean climate with its hot summers and mild winters. Pack light clothing for the summer months, from June to September, but a light jacket is recommended for the cooler evenings. Don’t forget to pack your sunscreen!
The local currency is the Euro (€). British travellers will need to exchange the pound sterling before or upon arrival. ATMs are readily available at the airport and in the city centre.
Your Greek adventure doesn’t have to end in Kozani. The beautiful cities of Thessaloniki and Veria are within a close proximity. Thessaloniki, home to the White Tower and the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, is a 2-hour drive away. Veria, known for its Byzantine museum and stunning architecture, is slightly closer and can be reached within an hour.
Enjoy your amazing journey to Kozani — a captivating blend of vibrant culture, golden beaches, and historic monuments awaits you!
