Kherson International Airport (KHE) is located just 5.6 miles (9 km) southeast of Kherson in southern Ukraine. It's a small yet effective transit point making your car rental experience straightforward and hassle-free. With a selection of car rental stations conveniently located at the terminal, your journey starts as soon as you land!
Unusually for the UK traveller, you'll notice that driving is on the right-hand side here, contrasted with left-hand driving in the UK. But don't worry, you'll soon adjust and be ready to explore the picturesque Ukrainian roads.
A range of international and local car rental companies operate within Kherson Airport. These include Avis, Sixt, and Hertz, amongst others. All offer a selection of cars to suit your journey, whether you're planning a round trip across the country or sticking closer to Kherson.
Note that an International Driving Permit (IDP), together with your UK licence is required to rent a car. Also, most rental firms have minimum age requirements, typically either 21 or 25.

Kherson is well connected by major highways, making it an ideal starting point for a road trip. From here, the coastal city of Odessa is under 4 hours’ drive away. Smaller, less-known places like Mykolaiv and Zaporizhia are also easily accessible.
Remember to carry a good map or a GPS device as signs are typically in Ukrainian, though some main roads may have English transliteration.
Unfamiliar to many UK travellers, Ukraine experiences a humid continental climate. To help you prepare, know that summers can be warm, with temperatures exceeding 30°C in July. Winters may drop below 0°C, especially in January.
Ukraine’s currency is the hryvnia (UAH), quite different to the British pound. Most places accept credit cards, but it's useful to carry some cash for smaller establishments and parking fees.
The charm of Ukraine lies in its lesser-known cities! While Kherson has its own attractions like the Kherson Fortress and the beautiful Dnieper River, make sure to explore surrounding cities with your rental car:
