Renting a car at Kharkiv International is a breeze. Car rental counters are conveniently located in the arrivals hall and are easily accessible. The car rental companies operating at the airport include Avis, Europcar, and Sixt. Remember to bring your driving licence and credit card when collecting your car.
We recommend booking a medium-sized car if you plan on sticking to the city. The roads are in good condition, but space can be limited in some areas. If you plan on venturing into the surrounding area, a SUV might be a better fit, especially during winter months, when the weather can get a little unpredictable.
There are plenty of petrol stations around the airport and on the way to the city. In exciting news for British visitors, prices at the petrol pumps are usually much cheaper in Ukraine than in the UK! Ukraine uses the Ukrainian Hryvnia (UAH), and credit cards are widely accepted at petrol stations, but it’s always handy to have some cash just in case.
Driving in Ukraine is on the right-hand side of the road, contrary to the UK. Roads are generally in good condition, but patience is sometimes required due to heavy traffic. Speed limits are typically 60km/h in urban areas, 90km/h on open roads, and 110km/h on motorways. Seat belts must be worn at all times, and it's strictly forbidden to drink and drive.
Getting to the city centre from the airport by car is fairly straight-forward. A direct route along the E105 will get you to the city centre in about 20 minutes. As always, it’s worth checking your route before you set off to avoid any delays.
Kharviv boasts a vibrant culture and rich history, with plenty of sights to see. And being situated close to other noteworthy cities like Poltava and Dnipro, a hired car gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace.
