Several reputable car hire companies operate at José María Córdova International airport. You'll find everything from economy cars, perfect for city driving, to SUVs, ideal for off-road adventures in Antioquia's mountainous terrain. Be sure to drive on the right-hand side of the road, unlike in the UK where the left-hand drive is customary. Car rental stations are conveniently located in the airport terminal.
Close to the airport, you'll find several petrol stations to fuel up before your journey. Unlike in the UK, petrol and diesel prices in Colombia are denominated per gallon, not per litre. The nearest petrol station is about 2km from the airport.
Readily accessible roads lead you from the airport to the heart of Antioquia and other intriguing spots. Notably, driving here can be challenging due to the hilly terrain and winding mountain roads. But the breathtaking vistas along your journey make up for any driving difficulty. You'll find road signs predominantly in Spanish, so brushing up on your Spanish traffic sign language might be a great idea.
Unlike the unpredictable British weather, Antioquia enjoys a year-round spring-like weather, with temperatures averaging 24°C. Be sure to pack for warm weather.
Colombia operates a closed currency system. The Colombian peso (COP) is the official national currency. This means you'll need to exchange your pounds (GBP) for pesos upon arrival at the airport or in the city.
Beyond the airport, you'll find Antioquia's capital city, Medellin, known as the 'City of Eternal Spring'. Here, you can enjoy beautiful botanical gardens, impressive museums, and a thriving food scene. For a more adventurous trip, you can explore the rural regions, where coffee plantations cover the lush hills.
